Surph formed out of a desire to service a larger variety of clients. Surviving the dot.com bubble of the early 2000's, Surph provided design and studio services for J. Walter Thompson, Enterprise Advertising, Leo Burnett, Cossette and Manifest, to name a few. Client work included 7-up, Pepsi, Tim Hortons, Bell Mobility and Rogers, Canadian Tire, Government of Ontario, City of Toronto. I returned to York and completed my Design degree as a mature student, while still operating the studio. Mid-2005 brought a new energy to my mind-set as I closed the shop down and took on Surph as my freelance moniker. Freelancing at large and small design, advertising and marketing agencies, and some in-house gigs provided good insight as to where my talents worked best. Show less

I took on this contract to assist a wonderful company the studio worked with ten years earlier. I realized, in this position, my skills are bigger and better than developing Gant charts and pushing papers around. My first design job right after graduating from George Brown College. I thought I was getting a job at Canadian Tire's head office in their Internal Communications Department. All the literature was internal facing and I thought Central Guaranty was a logo/slogan used for company moral. It wasn't until I had worked for a few weeks that I discovered where I was actually working – a trust company! It was all good until the company became too top management heavy. As the rumour mill started to swirl and big names came and went, I asked my manager if the company could ever dissolve. A lovely man, he said at the time it was "too big to fail" and that "after Central Trust and Guaranty Trust merged, Central Guaranty was on its way to becoming the second largest trust company in Canada!" A few months later, he was offered a retirement package. The department was shuffled around to various middle managers who knew more about RSP's and mutual funds than what to do with a couple of fresh young designers – the writing was on the wall and we were shown the door a few months later. I went on to work for an annual report factory, a company that produced all the Canadian Tire flyers (ugh!) and then was pulled in to help realize J. Walter Thompson's first digital studio. Show less
