Development of optimal control of non-invasive neuromodulation algorithms and devices for the treatment of sleep apnea syndromes. Research topic and contribution: Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS) is a multifactorial disease characterized by recurrent episodes of respiratory pauses during sleep. These episodes may provoke acute cardiorespiratory responses along with alterations of the sleep structure, which may be deleterious in the long term. In this context, this thesis proposes a novel non-invasive therapy based on adaptive kinesthetic stimulation for the treatment of SAS. New optimal control methods based on a closed-loop control system integrating concurrent, coupled proportional-derivative (PD) controllers in order to adaptively change the kinesthetic stimulation delivered to the patient are also proposed. Two clinical protocols have been initiated for the evaluation and validation of the proposed methods. Overall, the results obtained show that the therapy is capable of precociously stopping SAS episodes, avoiding their deleterious consequences over time. Associated publications: 2 articles in JCR indexed international peer-reviewed journals, 1 international conference, 1 international conference abstract and a software registration. Show less

Developed activity: Design, test and implementation of a medical device for the treatment of the sleep apnea syndrome based on non-invasive kinesthetic stimulation (PASITHEA project). Preliminary analysis of the acquired data from a first clinical protocol (HYPNOS protocol - ClincalTrials.gov identifier NCT03300037) involving five hospital centers in France. A full polysomnography (PSG) acquisition connected in parallel to the proposed medical device was performed; resulting in the acquisition of more than 25 different physiological signals for each of the 46 included patients. Developed activity: Development and optimization of a new miniaturized version of a medical acquisition and stimulation device initially created in the LTSI. The objective was the development of a completely new prototype of the previously mentioned device, more efficient in terms of power consumption and with novel embedded signal processing methods. Associated publications: 1 software registration.
