    • Dietetics intern
      • Aug 2018 - Sep 2018

The Madras Medical Mission is a reputed multi-speciality hospital and this one-month internship there was very valuable. My roles included shadowing and observing dieticians as they went on rounds of different departments of the hospital for the first week and conducting a nutritional assessment of the patients, calculating their energy requirements and prescribing diets under supervision of a dietician as the month progressed. During this internship, I had the opportunity to interact with patients from different parts of the country and occasionally from other parts of the world. I had to explain the diet they needed to follow, why they need to do so and answered any questions they had to the best of my ability. Having spoken proficiency in a few Indian regional languages along with English, I was able to talk to patients with ease and help my seniors out while communicating with them. I was also required to do a case study on a patient as a part of this internship. This task was particularly interesting for me as the patient I picked had a multitude of complex and interlinked medical issues. This ensured that her diet prescription would be complicated. The patient also had a psychiatric illness which was worsening because of her physical illness and diet. Upon further investigating we found that the patient lost her appetite because the people surrounding her constantly gave her contradicting advice on what she could eat. This case made me realize that food is not the only factor that has a role in nutrition. It has prompted me to try and understand the effect other aspects of an individual's lifestyle have on their nutritional status. This could include their cultural background, their mental state and even their surroundings. Show less
