Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) “Mature vs. Old Growth: Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics in Forest Soil Organic Matter” Determining C:N ratio differences between mature and old growth forest soil organic matter in the Northeastern United States using natural abundance stable isotope analyses and data. After completing this study, I have found that forest age is not a controlling factor of C:N and N retention within forest soil organic matter. My tasks this summer include: - Submitting a research proposal to the program directors and my mentor - Attending weekly seminars, workshops, forums, lectures, and presentations run by distinguished scientists and professionals - Conducting, completing, and presenting an entire scientific research project relevant to translational ecology to both the scientific community and general public - Field work and data collection throughout the Northeastern United States - Lab work including soil preparation and analysis - Submitting a scientific research report to the program directors and my mentor - Educating the public of all ages in the importance of translational ecology Show less
