Me and my team monitor which stocks are included in the Socially Responsible investing (SRI) fund of Desautels Capital Management. Each sector team must submit a due diligence sheet explaining how the company they want to pitch respects the positive and negative screens of the fund. We then review this their submission, discuss with the team if we need more information and accept or reject the stock to be pitched. This year we are computing the fund's carbon intensity by calculating the fund's greenhouse gas emission per million of dollar invested. As of today the SRI fund emits 19.4 tons of CO2e/$M invested compared to 50 tons of CO2e/$M invested for the S&P 500. This shows us that our efforts to invest sustainably go in the right direction.

I follow the utility sector and in particular companies in the renewable energy industry. With my team we will pitch a company to be included in the A2 and SRI fund in December.

I worked on a panel data base from 1980 to 2018 containing case laws from every Canadian province. To create the database I automated the download of 30,000 documents using Python and the Selenium and Beautiful Soup libraries. This saved me and my team hundreds of hours of boring manual work.I then used natural language processing in python to measure gender bias, identifying gender driven lexical environments. I wrote an algorithm that identified the gender of the plaintiff and the defendant in each case law, using dependency parsing in the library SpaCy. I found that 75% of plaintiffs are female and 85% of defendants are male. Finally, using SpaCy, I identified all the different adjectives used by the judge to describe the plaintiff and the defendant. I then showed the result in a word-cloud. I found that adjectives used for plaintiffs were more subjectives whereas adjectives used for defendant were very neutral.
