My son has played competitive ice hockey for over 15 years, and is now playing at the collegiate level. Paul has figured significantly during this period as Skills Instructor, Camp Director, Coach, Hockey and Coaching Director, and Association GM. In most cases, my son was a participant in the program, and in several cases, I worked with Paul as a team manager or association board member. Competitive travel, select, "tier 1", AAA, etc. amateur hockey in the U.S. is expensive, with costs typically ranging from $5,000 to $15,000+ per player, per season. Many families who can afford this activity tend to be accustomed to getting their way. In each hockey-related role, Paul had the opportunity to deal with people who were demanding and not easily convinced when sometimes hard decisions relating to their children had to be made. In such cases, I saw Paul approach the situation first thinking of what would be best for the child and player, and second, how best to address the parents concerns. Paul used interpersonal skills and techniques ranging from collaborative partnership, to tough love, and most methods in-between. In every case, while Paul sought the development of the child into a well-rounded player, he also demonstrated that he was concerned about their development into a young man of character and integrity. This was not just a good business approach, it was Paul's personality, reflecting his own character and integrity. While we're now in different industries with little or no overlap, I would not hesitate to hire, work for, or do business with Paul. Regardless of the role, Paul is "that guy" that you want on your team.
