Paul was great fun to work with and was the epitome of a team player. When working with Paul you know you’ve employed someone not only with fantastic technical skills, but a sharp wit and a kind and friendly outlook to life. Always willing to try new things and up for a challenge, I would work with Paul again tomorrow if I had the opportunity. Paul is one of the most hardworking and dedicated individuals I’ve met in my life.

Initially started off in Application Support as a means of getting to grips with all aspects of the system quickly and subsequently moved on to make various enhancements to existing Java/Oracle application called Pulse. Pulse handled SimplyHealth’s Cashplan and PMI policies. Projects included making documents and correspondence available online , Price Review, PMI Business Sale and Data Depersonalisation project. Technically , changes varied between Java, Oracle PLSQL , JSPX, Thunderhead, Oracle Reports, Reporting Services and making good use of Jira, Confluence and BitBucket. We transitioned into the Agile way of working, initially starting off using Kanban and more recently moving to Scrum. I passed a Certified Scrum Developer Course provided by Radtac and also passed part 1 of Oracle 11G DBA Certification exam.

This was a large project which involved migrating data from 7 large legacy systems into one application. This entailed extracting the data using scripts. The extracted data was then passed on to a third party for cleansing. Once cleansed the data was then passed back to us to load into the appropriate tables. In all there were about 300 files to load. My duties involved: Creating/ Updating scripts to extract data in appropriate format. Creating sqlldr scripts to load cleansed data for each of the data files. Creating a mechanism, using shell scripting, to allow data to be loaded automatically when the cleansed data was ready. Performing ad-hoc data loads. Performing DBA tasks such as resolving tablespace issues, constraint issues, unusable index violations, exports/imports, restores. Performance tuning scripts. Using my Java knowledge I created a mechanism, using Java Server Pages and JDBC to graphically show the progress of the loads and to allow sql reports to be run directly from the graphs. We would also use the reports to show the progress as primary and foreign key constraints and indexes were made usable

Documented existing legacy system for Department of Constitutional Affairs by creating detailed As Is Use Case documents covering existing Caseman functionality. This required in depth knowledge of Oracle Forms 4.5 and Reports 2.5. I was originally involved in the creation of these forms and reports on my first contract with EDS in December 1996. Worked on Full Life Cycle of SUPS project to upgrade existing Legacy Caseman system for handling County Court cases. Developed scripts to gather statistical information from all 218 Courts. Provided general adhoc queries / interface scripts, utilizing shell scripting and plsql/sqlplus. Converted existing Caseman Application Reports written in Oracle Reports 2.5 to Oracle Reports 10G. Provided support for rollout of new system, which required a flexible and diligent approach to resolving live issues. Performed DBA duties for current environment issues on legacy system, such as missing objects, grants, adding tablespaces, imports, exports etc.
