As Head of Finance, I created a Finance Department capable of supporting a Joint Venture (JV) organisation contracted to build the Queensferry Crossing. The JV consisted of 4 international construction companies. The department had to be flexible enough to meet the changing needs of the project, growing from a turnover of £50m in the first year to £250m in the 4th year. Recruited and trained new managers within my team, and in total had six direct reports and 22 in overall headcount Rolled out SAP and selection of other appropriate software solutions, including stock management and payroll systems. Designed processes and procedures for the operation of the finance department including day to day processing, banking, payroll, taxation, VAT, stock control et al. Dealt with the implications of cross border trade including setting up contracts with shipping agents, dealing with HMRC and JV partners to secure the customs clearance of the bridge components arriving from outside the EU. Managed the international banking relationships and designed banking and payment processes to mitigate the risk of fraud or error, whilst allowing the firm to operate efficiently, (a key requirement of our contract with the Scottish Government was prompt payment of suppliers). Key member of the senior management team, maintaining good relations with the four parties to the JV, as well as our external auditors. Supervised the production of our annual accounts and fed into the process of on-going project valuation and forecasting to ensure the project remained on track. Show less
