Leader of 60 strong tutorial team; Chair of Sixth Form Management Committee; member of Faculty Chairs Committee. Responsibility for all university applications and academic tracking and intervention in Sixth Form (400 students.) • Delivered Sixth Form Centre: an academic and social hub where students create a sociable, relaxed working environment. Having lobbied for this for several years, I was involved from the first day, working with all stakeholders to create a facility that allowed the School to tap a cognitive and social surplus. The results have been spectacular, and the use of the Centre exceeded our most ambitious projections. • Raising Ambitions in Higher Education: drove applications to higher tier universities from under 50% to 90% of leavers over 5 years • Restructuring of Tutorial Programme: led change from subject to house tutorial system, streamlining control and reporting. Created and chaired the Sixth Form Management Cabinet. • Overhaul of Stowe’s Careers Provision: worked with my Deputy Head Sixth Form/Head of Careers, to deliver total overhaul of the Careers Service at Stowe, achieving Gatsby compliance • The Pandemic: Universities Directions. Managed university outcomes and prepared contingency measures. Over both cycles, the vast majority of applicants achieved places in their preferred institutions (2020: 69%; 2021: 62%). Both cycles saw only 4% opting to reapply the following year. • Improving Learning Outcomes: putting the pupil at the centre. My approach to education – both at a classroom level and in cohort terms – is to encourage students to take responsibility for their own education. I believe that the more an individual feels that they have ownership of and control over their learning, the more likely they are to engage with the process and realise their learning potential. Life is more than just a job Our experience shows that few can expect ‘a career’ anymore and hence traditional careers advice has to evolve to meet a new and chaotic environment. The challenge is to find a way to help school leavers prosper in an unfamiliar and intimidating environment: we coach skills that reach across careers and so help shape lives and not just jobs. This is how we can get your pupils one step ahead of the competition; make no mistake, that it is what it is. University is no longer the automatic choice it might once have been and no one can expect an automatic place. We can advise pupils on whether university is the right choice for them and which university they might want to look at. We can also offer guidance on the application techniques that work and the ones that should be avoided. Show less
