Provide medical cover for major events and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service Trust (NHS) calls. Attend life and death emergencies, treating and transferring patients to hospital. I carry out invasive life-saving procedures including cannulation, blood sugar testing and intubation along with administering potentially life-saving medication. Further triage is carried out to determine the priority of care and arrange for the patients speedy transportation to hospital. Responsible for the daily running of all the tasks that would occur in any Primary Care Practice and the management and welfare of a team of 17 staff. Duties include; daily, weekly and monthly checks of the medical records system, medical stores, medical boards, treatment rooms, reception and duty medic. Teaching trade training for all personnel covering basic life support, automated defibrillation, anaphylaxis and manual handling. Furthermore deployment overseas to places such as Afghanistan on The Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) when required to deal with urgent medevac missions which involved receiving handovers in FOB’s and often highly dangerous grids. Responsibilities included co-ordinating various casualty lifts day and night and administering intravenous pain relief to both paediatric and adult casualties. Emergency medicine was brought to the fore by a case which involved 4 critical patients with gunshot wounds. One patient had a gunshot wound to his back and the exit wound had blown a hole through his chest, this required the application of a Bolin chest seal and gaining EZIO access, while the doctor performed a rapid sequence induction. The relevant drugs were administered to perform this procedure under the doctor’s supervision and then assistance was required while the doctor intubated the patient. We saved 3 out of 4 critically ill patients, which provided the realisation that to work in medicine we have to accept that we cannot save everyone. Following this tour it was a great honour to receive; a Certificate of Commendation for Distinguished Service in the support of Operation Herrick. Show less
