Working in the virology department based within Manchester royal infirmary my primary role was the receipt and processing of COVID samples from patients. This role required me to adhere to strict protocols of how to handle category 3 biological samples safely and process them efficiently and accurately. I also processed samples using the Biofire and Cepheid rapid turn around testing platforms and performed in house quality control checks on these systems. I also utilised the LIMS system to book samples in for testing. I also helped with more general laboratory tasks such as cleaning and ensuring stocks of consumables and PPE were maintained. My role within F2G involved the development, running and optimisation of the Mycobank screen, a whole cell genetic screen designed to identify the essential gene set of the filamentous fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. In addition I cloned and expressed/purified proteins identified via Mycobank and was involved in novel assay development relating to these proteins. My position required me to utilise a variety of microbiological and molecular techniques such as fungal/bacterial transformations, PCR, cloning, fungal mutant strain generation including gene KO, Southern blotting, recombinant protein expression and various other techniques. I also researched target genes identified via Mycobank to ascertain their suitability for high throughput screening. Show less
