I am a School Counselor from a CACREP University trained in childhood and adolescent development committed to working for equity and inclusion for all students. I use a 'student-centered,' strength-based model to help each student reach his or her maximum potential.School Counselors are educators who are specifically certified in human behavior and who provide assistance to the entire educational community where we serve. We promote academic excellence through these primary interventions: counseling interventions (individual and group interventions, career and college planning); large group activities (including classroom units on various topics such as drug and alcohol resistance, internet safety, strategies for academic enrichment, awareness of sexual harassment); consultation (with parents, teachers, special education teams, outside therapists, administrators and community leaders); coordination of services; and crisis intervention. Together, this is called Comprehensive, Developmental School Counseling. We work with each student to reflect on personal and academic growth or move toward change. Our work impacts the broader educational and surrounding community by promoting social and academic success, encouraging people to engage in sometimes difficult dialogues about kids, families, race, justice and community in order to insure equity in education in a multicultural, multilingual world.
