Mr. Rennich led efforts to develop and validate backprojection-based algorithms for a large DoD-sponsored stratospheric radar system. The effort included testing with simulated data, followed by field exercises of increasing complexity to demonstrate the suitability for stratospheric operations. Mr. Rennich’s work resulted in one of the first well-focused SAR images captured from a high-altitude balloon. Subsequent balloon test flights included innovations with multiple-input/multiple-output waveforms to maximize target detection sensitivity.Mr. Rennich led field-test and study efforts for NASA, DARPA, and the DoD to investigate radar operations from a constellation of small satellites and, separately, from a network of high-altitude balloons. These studies involved the optimization of radar parameters for operations in space and the stratosphere and included development of multi-static techniques to improve collection efficiency from slow-moving balloon platforms.Mr. Rennich led numerous field exercises to characterize radar performance, demonstrate capabilities, and calibrate radar operations. This has included construction and deployment of specialized ground targets to support the full polarimetric calibration of an airborne UHF radar system. Additional field exercises have included deployment to an active combat zone to ensure proper operation of a reconnaissance radar system. Show less
