The Laidlaw Scholars Programme aims to develop a generation of leaders who are skilled researchers, embrace data-based decision-making, and believe it is a moral imperative to lead with integrity. The program itself has many components including: 1. A research project For six weeks, scholars work with an academic supervisor and/or an experienced research team to develop their abilities in investigative analysis, problem-solving and data management. The research topic can be selected from a list provided by the university associated with the programme. 2. Leadership training Scholars begin their Laidlaw experience with a leadership training retreat to learn their own innate leadership preferences and core attributes, as well as develop their leadership skills through exercises and applied learning. Their development continues through the academic year with guest speakers, coaching and more. 3. Leadership-in-Action project: This is a 6-week immersive project that takes place in the second summer of the programme. Learning through service, scholars test their leadership skills and expand their understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. Importantly, due to the Laidlaw programme, I have experienced many leadership and networking-based opportunities, such as attending a conference at the London School of Economics and branching out with staff at the Timothy Smith Network and New England Biolabs in Boston Massachusetts. For clarity, the latter of these two was accomplished due to the funding from the Laidlaw programme, which, as implied, allowed me to work with the Timothy Smith Network in Boston along with the biology laboratories at Durham University where I held teaching and research-based positions respectively. For more information, and to see my outputs relating to my positions, the following link is provided for my Laidlaw network account where global networking is achieved via an online community of international scholars and real-world events. During my time at North Manchester General, I had the fortunate opportunity to experience the day-to-day application of medicine in a real-world setting. To elaborate, I spent most of my time shadowing nurses and consultant anaesthetists within the pre-operative department of North Manchester General. Here, patients would undergo consultations or 'anaesthetic reviews' in which patients were engaged in discussions which determined what method of painkiller they would be allocated during general surgery. Many patients here had multiple comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes or congenital defects that played a big role in what medication they could receive and as such this provided invaluable learning opportunities regarding new pathologies and the teamwork that is intertwined within the hospital itself and the procedures that must be followed for surgery to be conducted safely. This was most true when patients became unsettled or frustrated by the news they were receiving and thus needed further deliberation with staff. Outside of the pre-op department, I also had the pleasure of spending time on the endoscopy ward where I had further interactions with patients, nurses, consultants, and general surgeons. Here, I was allowed to witness the application and importance of 'informed consent' between the doctor and patient as the procedures patients underwent, such as colonoscopies and polypectomies, could result in serious bleeding or perforation. Here, witnessing said procedures, along with interacting with patients and gaining insights from the staff on call, was invaluable for my next academic steps; interviews; and, once again, the day-to-day application of medicine. The Timothy Smith Network is a non-profit organisation working out of Roxbury in Boston, Massachusetts. My time with the TSN was encapsulated by a project centred on overcoming the digital divide that many students from poor socioeconomic backgrounds face. For clarity, TSN provided ample opportunities for all the scholars in Boston to build towards our future endeavours whilst working on the project's goal. To achieve said goal, scholars were instructed to teach a technology-based module to a class of students so they could mimic working for a company/academic institution. Thus, within meetings that were conducted before our arrival in Boston, many scholars, myself included, were in charge of developing a curriculum that was then implemented by us scholars over the summer. For clarity, I oversaw the teaching of 3D modelling for a module termed ‘Tech Your Health’, which centred on students creating a device that would monitor or improve an individual’s mental and/or physical health. Here, the use of Python and the software Fusion 360 was imperative so students could improve upon their fledging tech skills whilst producing, and 3D printing, components needed for their alluded health device. In relation to the final weeks of the project, all our students had a functional prototype that encapsulated what they learned over the summer. In my eyes, the prototypes themselves served as the ‘proof in the pudding’ for all the hard work put in by both the students and staff to overcome the discussed digital divide. Ultimately, it is hoped that, due to the programmes offered by TSN, the students now possess connections with academics in Boston, are more geared towards a future with technology, and, at the very least, now have completed an impressive programme that can be utilised in their academic career. Durham leadership academy is a highly competitive year-long practical programme, the Leadership Academy strives to create the leaders of tomorrow, through a personalised approach to leadership and professional training. One crucial aspect to the institution is its mentoring programme, in which personalised mentoring from Durham alumni, partners and monthly newsletters with signposting to leadership opportunities are assigned to students. Mentoring consistently involves conducting meetings (online or in person) with both mentee and mentor on a semi-regular basis between the weeks commencing at the start of term in Autumn to the end of the Summer term. Additionally, there is the opportunity to take part in our virtual talks programme, forums and a networking event with all students and mentors to assist in personal development, development as leaders, and devloping future careers. Importantly, the latter is completed via one on one session to further grow an understanding on how to build a portfolio of evidence to use when applying for future jobs, as well as building on communication and prepartion skills with the use of the mentor as guide for their corresponding field. Finally, to develop as leaders, it is important that lessons on understanding how to communicate constructive goals, so that they are adopted and understood, knowing team culture, and learning how to manage conflict are given through the year. Thus to acheive this goal, the academy consists of a number of components for student leaders, including interactive workshops; guest speaker series; discussion groups, such as book clubs and think tanks; drop-in sessions; a two-day leadership training residential; personalised mentoring from Durham alumni and partners; and monthly newsletters with signposting to leadership opportunities. Over the summer of 2022, I undertook active research at a laboratory within the Department of Biosciences under Dr Vincent Croset and James Evans. During my time I focused on testing the olfactory memory of Drosophila in an attempt to further understand and manipulate synaptic plasticity (the underlying process behind memory and learning). More specifically, I: - Cross-bred Drosophila for production of genetic mutations. - Trained and Tested Drosophila within a blackout behaviour room to associate various odours with Drosophila's long-term olfactory memory. - Utilised qPCR, PCR, gel electrophoresis and Liquid Nitrogen to extract and test RNA and cDNA. - Collected data on a daily basis and compiled said data in a worksheet for presentation to my supervisor and a panel of other academics from the same laboratory. At the end of my tenure, another 2-3 weeks were spent reviewing data to make a report and poster for both my supervisor and sponsors. Show less
