As Operations Manager, I work with our publishers on a day-to-day basis to handle all sorts of issues. I handle purchase negotiations of new equipment, hiring and firing of publishers, and more. I also fill in when various positions are empty. I have been interim publisher at two dailies and multiple weeklies. I write, do layout, help with marketing strategies, handle social media and more. This was an exciting position to be in. The Western Nebraska Observer was struggling when I took over. Sales were down, circulation was down, and the newspaper had no internet presence to speak of. Within the first year we grew sales by 15%, increased circulation by 4%, and established a new website. When I left we had sales up by another 20%, and circulation increased by another 2%. The website was getting more traffic, especially in our popular photo gallery section. We had a young staff, all trained by me, that was excited to continue to move the newspaper forward. We made mistakes, learned a lot, and ultimately grew as a team. Show less

Where it all began for me. I got my start not knowing what I was doing. I was given the chance to be a reporter by someone who believed in me. The amount of growth I experienced as a writer, and as a person, was incredible. I learned so much about the town, the people, and myself at The Beloit Call. During sports seasons I would turn in more than 20 stories a week. When it wasn't sports season, I would hand in 8-10 a week. Aside from reporting I also handled the labeling and inserting of the out of county papers, was responsible for the transportation of commercial print jobs, and helped to write and layout special sections.
