Second Chances Farm was founded in 2017 by community leader Ajit Mathew George, who sought to find a way to fight the recidivism epidemic facing the nation while simultaneously addressing other serious issues like growing food locally, carbon footprint, climate change, quality of produce and food deserts. Second Chances Farm’s vision is two-fold: to reduce its carbon footprint by growing food locally 365 days a year, while replacing recidivism with compassionate capitalism and turning entrepreneurs-in-residence into agripreneurs. Second Chances Farm plans to break the cycle of recidivism, while commercially growing local, pesticide- and herbicide-free produce in economically depressed areas and converting old buildings into eco-friendly plant factories. SCF is focused on hiring and giving turn-key entrepreneurial opportunities to returning citizens who after serving their sentences in prison are offered an “Entrepreneurs-in-Residence” program (“EIR”) that will enable them to become self-sufficient agripreneurs. SCF produces organic food, year-round in “plant factories” in local communities and minimize the carbon footprint of transporting consumable goods. My responsibilities continue to develop at this innovative start-up. I am currently interviewing and making recommendations for potential candidates who will be accepted into Second Chances Farm's "Entrepreneurs-in-Residence" program. I oversee and assist the "returning citizens" in day-to-day coping with life while in the community, oversee and provide education programs for staff, returning citizens and volunteers who will be providing mentorship to the returning citizens, and counseling as needed or referrals for more intense treatment or therapy. I am also involved in outreach in the community to promote and recruit for Second Chances Farm to government agencies, churches and organizations. Show less

    • Master Correctional Counselor
      • Aug 2007 - Mar 2018

The James T. Vaughn Correctional Center is the state's largest adult, male correctional facility. Currently, JTVCC houses approximately 2,500 inmates. JTVCC houses minimum, medium, and maximum security inmates. As a Master Correctional Counselor, I was a team leader for other counselors with duties of having a full caseload. I was involved with creating treatment plans and following the clients' progress, plus providing the necessary services or referral to other treatment programs or agencies. In order to determine needs and goals, it was crucial to understand how past behavior reflects on treatment needs and goals. My knowledge extends to human behavior, family dynamics, basic medical and mental health issues, learning disabilities and how this relates to behavior, social dynamics, substance abuse issues, and how all of this relates to abnormal and/or criminal behavior.
