Currently, our group investigates how maternal nutrition impacts fetal development and the health status during adulthood. More specifically we are interested in how the exposure to hazardous chemicals during pregnancy and lactation has been linked to an increased risk of several pathologies. Among those harmful substances that might be potentially found in maternal diet, mycotoxins pose a concern to human health. Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by fungi found in a variety of cereals and fruits. Food-borne mycotoxins produce deleterious effects such as nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, immune deficiency or cancer. However, the effect of maternal mycotoxin exposure on enteric immune system formation of the offspring and early-life intestinal defense has not been fully elucidated. I am also interested in how other environmental cues modulates the development and function of immune cells at mucosal barriers such as the intestine. Show less
