It is with the utmost pleasure and strongest enthusiasm that I provide this letter of highest recommendation on behalf of Mr. Pankaj Dhiman. I was his M.S. thesis advisor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, during which I had a chance to observe his scholastic development and communication skills during the course of graduate school (2017-2019). I sought Pankaj for his excellent background and research in Matlab, Mathematica, and C++ programming, gained largely through his previous work at Delhi Technological University. I wanted Pankaj to utilize his computational mechanics skills to help our lab develop advanced lithium-ion batteries numerical models. From the outset, it was apparent that Pankaj is not only highly intelligent and technically skilled, but that he has the patience, persistence, and organizational skills necessary to perform research at the highest level. Pankaj learned very fast, adapts himself quickly, and be able to work on project independently. He was an excellent team player as well: he worked very well with the other members in my research group. The research project Pankaj had worked on provides a comprehensive understanding of changes in mechanical stresses in lithium-ion batteries due to electrode materials’ defects and effects of stresses during various scan-rate electrochemical cycling and phase transformation. The results provide an insight into how presence of defects and phase transformation changes the electrochemical behaviour of the material. It is concluded that the combined effect of the stresses induced around dislocations during phase transformation and high scan rate can be used for creating batteries for specific applications based on the overvoltage encountered in those applications. With this 2-year project, Pankaj is in the process of finishing his first-author journal article:
