Having trained with a regional firm of accountants, I spent 13 years at the Plymouth office of PwC before joining Bishop Fleming in 2001. I am a key member of the firm’s specialist team serving Charities and Not-for-Profit organisations and lead on our academy and other education sector clients. I also advise a portfolio of owner-managed businesses. I have headed up the development of our approach to the academy sector and am seen as an expert by both clients, the Education Funding Agency and the ICAEW. I have advised a number of academies through the conversion process, including Multi-Academy Trusts, including advising on the governance and taxation implications. I keep my clients up to date on changes in regulation and best practice using regular e-mail contact, tweets and blogs. My key area of expertise is around financial governance in academies. I advise trustees, governors, audit committees and the accounting officer on their roles and responsibilities. I have developed our approach to the internal audit requirements as prescribed in the academies financial handbook. I run our local charities and academies forums for our clients which cover a range of topical matters, and also presents at academy and charity seminars including the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). I deliver a range of bespoke Governor and Trustee training, and act as a sounding board for the finance team. I am a director of Ivybridge Academy Trust, a multi academy trust I am a Trustee of the Ivybridge Youth Centre For my owner managed businees clients I see my role as that of general business adviser, advising on all aspects of business. Having qualified with a regional firm of accountants and worked in a ‘big four’ firm in Plymouth for 13 years, I am well placed to advise on the far reaching business needs of owner-managed businesses."
