Phillis is a prime example of grace under pressure. In fact, she exhibits grace at any time. During my tenure as executive assistant to the publisher at the Standard-Times, I had the pleasure of assisting Phillis in the human resources department. She is a skilled mediator and multi-talented senior manager. She was the lone human resources executive for a workforce of more than 200 people. She negotiated an environment that is deadline intensive and employs diverse education levels and crafts. So many times she was a calming influence for employees. Her knowledge and demeanor gave employees and her peers confidence. I regard Phillis as a role model and mentor. From her I gained an incredible variety of knowledge and skills in the human resources area and in exhibiting professional behavior. I also learned from her that obstacles only make us stronger and more determined to succeed, and succeed, she has.
