Provide grass roots level support to asylum seekers from a variety of countries. Most of the people I support have no family in the UK, have no possessions, and know little English. My role is to support them to integrate into British society in whatever way I can. The needs of each asylum seeker differ, therefore, I assess each person and work closely with them to provide tailored support. I am an able communicator and understand the importance of adapting my style to accommodate the person I am speaking too. I use initiative to find new ways to engage with asylum seekers across Nottingham and to get them involved. Show less

    • Judicial Marshalling
      • Jul 2022 - Jul 2022

I had the pleasure of marshalling HHJ Richardson, Recorder of Sheffield in a two-handed murder trial. I witnessed the prosecutors opening speech, examination in chief and cross examination of a key witness, who was the last person to see the deceased alive. I witnessed how the Judge is responsible for managing Defendants and other court professionals. I was able to assess what I thought the Defendant’s Defences would likely be following the prosecution opening and discuss this with HHJ Richardson. It was eye-opening to see a case from a neutral starting point, as opposed to being dedicated to either version of events. Taking a step back can often be important. Show less

I have the ability to build rapport with clients, including vulnerable clients detained. I am a confident advisor, able to manage difficult clients when required! I am not afraid to raise issues with custody sergeants to ensure clients’ rights are realised. • 'Unbarred' volunteer
      • Feb 2017 - Oct 2018

I volunteered within the education department of two prisons, one of which is a sexual offenders prison and the other is a category D prison. I worked to inform prisoners of their rights of disclosure when leaving prison and applying for work, education or volunteering. This formed part of the rehabilitation process for prisoners with the approach that if prisoners are aware of when they need to disclose their convictions and ways in which they can do it, then they will find work and will be less likely to reoffend. Moreover, I informed prisoners of a new scheme known as the 'ban the box' campaign where employers will not ask if you have any convictions until later on in the process when they have observed the person's work ethic; a positive for many prisoners. I shadowed numerous barristers in various conferences involving tax matters including: Transfers of Going Concern (TOGC),VAT, Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and Stamp Duty (SDLT) matters. The week also involved assisting with preparatory works, reading case law, and considering the argument for both our clients and also considering the arguments that the revenue may raise. Overall, the mini-pupillage allowed an in depth, realistic insight into the life of a Barrister and into the work one might expect during pupillage and later. Show less
