I used machine learning methods to investigate the relationship between US presidential speeches and the S&P 500 index. This required the use of web-scraping, Natural Language Processing (stopword removal, lemmatization, sentiment analysis, vectorization, Feature Extraction, Dimension Reduction, TFIDF and BERT), Neural Networks, Convolutional Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines and Linear and Logistic Regression. I also incorporated autoregressive S&P500 variables and found a slight increase in prediction ability occurs when including vectorized Presidential Speech Data in the ML models.

During this contract I was part of a four person team responsible for developing the first Southern African database of the costs and benefits of environmental restoration projects. I was also responsible for the example analysis of the database for a an academic article which is pending submission to 'SA Journal of Science'.

During this contract I was part of a 4 person team that completed an economic valuation of the ecosystems and ecosystem services derived from Algoa Bay in South Africa. The research integrated the use of proxy methods for valuation and data management. This was the first instance of this type of research in South Africa and our methods are to be used as a framework to value the rest of the South African coastal system. While our roles in the team were not explicitly defined I tended to take the lead on numerical and data handling aspects. My final task for the project was to compress 56 data sheets into 10 data sheets to allow for easy and accurate updating of ecosystem values and parameters going forward. We are aiming to submit our findings for publication in the Elsevier subsidiary journal 'Ecosystem Services'.
