FabLab UTFSM is an student initiative inside of the Federico Santa María Technical University's Santiago campus and a member of the global FabLab network. It's a prototyping laboratory, where students, faculty members and everyone interested get training and access to tools and equipment needed for digital prototyping.FabLab is an ever-changing environment, and today, FabLab is going through a transition to a new business structure focused on making the work of our staff and members easier, and our spaces and equipment safer. We're also working on building an staff of mentors that will help the lab's mission of offering an space where people can come, learn and work in innovative technologies, with faculty and key members of the community to help them.The Lab Manager role is about connecting the lab's need with the rest of the community, and managing the space keeping, training and in-house development staff. Our product, "POC Paga", was an innovative payment system for upper managements to control the money their executives were using in work dinners and other events. The software used facial recognition to identify the users and authorize payments. My initial role on the company was as a software developer for a Django-based client management solution, meanwhile, the front end of the service was developed in Adobe Flex. One milestone of my work in this position was the development of an invoicing and financial report system. As the software prototype grew, I was put in charge of optimizing the software stack, so I implemented a message queue for our services, using RabbitMQ and Redis, to handle parallel tasks like the creation of biometric profiles. Other contributions for this company were the implementation of a GIT-based version control workflow, the documentation of the system architecture and software stack, deploying a test server and testing environments, and the deployment of virtual development environments for the team.
