During my year-out placement as part of my degree I worked on a coastal defence scheme which consisted of the construction and development of a rock revetment, sea defence wall, three sets of beach access steps and a newly raised promenade. My main responsibilities included setting out precast units, concrete pour temporary works, retaining walls and other promenade works. Furthermore, I had to conduct quality checks on all works to ensure the highest quality was always being achieved throughout the project, manage tasks and people to confirm that the works were being completed using the correct methods while also being conducted within a safe environment. I also had to carry out multiple office responsibilities such as keeping excel spreadsheets and as-built records up to date. This placement has been highly fulfilling and important for my development as an engineer and I have gained many transferable skills that I will be able to take with me into my master’s degree and through to my career as an engineer which include planning, design, specification compliance, quality control, project management, communication, interpersonal skills and more.

The project was a residential development of 274 apartments, consisting of one, two and three bedroom units. My main roles were assisting engineers with setting out, leveling and surveys, making concrete cube samples and sending them off for testing, keeping on top of the signage on site, checking in prefabricated bathroom pods when they arrived on site and much more. This was a really good work placement in which I learnt a lot from, I was given a lot of trust and quite often was just left to my own accord to complete tasks assigned to me without the requirement of supervision which helped me to gain confidence on-site.

The project was maintenance painting to the Silver Jubilee steel arch superstructure and refurbishment of the Runcorn Approach Viaduct. I shadowed two engineers during my time on this project and helped them with their day to day tasks, such as checking for health and safety risks on-site, creating and updating spreadsheets on excel to keep track of how far along the project was, creating flowcharts and signs for around site and much more. From this work placement I gained a lot of on-site experience and learnt a lot about to project specifically, as well as gaining knowledge on the different job roles on-site.
