I worked with Professor Christina Dieli-Conwright’s group in the Department of Medical Oncology, Population Sciences at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Centre. Within Professor Dieli-Conwright’s group I helped to analyse datasets to write review articles, participated in lab meetings and led a team of researchers to produce a systematic review published as first author. I worked under Professor Geoff Higgins at the Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology, with the kind supervision of Dr Remko Prevo. The aim of this research is to increase the effect of radiation therapy on cancer whilst preserving the surrounding healthy tissue. This requires a better understanding of the ways in which both cancer cells and normal cells respond to irradiation on a molecular level, and subsequently how this might be manipulated to increase the effectiveness of radiation therapy. In the lab, I developed competency in cell culture, siRNA-mediated genetic manipulation, western blotting, flow cytometry, and clonogenic cell survival analysis. I used these skills to assist the group in further understanding the role of a specific histone acetyltransferase in the cellular response to ionising radiation. Show less
