My last act at IDEO was about activation: For the first time, I found myself gravitating more towards the people in my orbit - colleagues, rising stars, clients, and friends - than the work itself. It was clear to me that, in this final stage, my purpose was to serve by supporting those people first and foremost. That realization ultimately opened the space I needed to jump into the transformational, human-centered work I’m now doing at Trium.

This chapter was the beginning of my search for something greater. We started a transformative rebuild of the Greater Toronto Airport - a project I feel most proud of. At the same time, I found myself holding the space in between the impact a project would have on IDEO and on our client in a way that felt new, intriguing, and absolutely exhilarating.

After we got our footing, our initial regional focus was on the Chinese and Japanese markets - both a dream come true for a designer like myself and a wonderful business challenge. I learned some of my most valuable lessons in understanding people, cultural diversity, and global partnership during this time.

In the US, IDEO was solidifying its place as a creative superpower. We were itching for a new frontier. So I hopped on a plane (so many times I lost count) and planted a flag in Shanghai for our Consumer Experience Design practice. Originally, we served as an engineering outpost for some of our largest North American clients trying to expand their efforts in China.

Snap-On Tools was the beginning of our product-market fit. After that, we ran as fast as we could, delivering experiential design and services to a kaleidoscopic mix of companies, organizations, and stakeholders. Of particular note was our work in creating HBO GO. At a time when the traditional music industry was being disrupted by the iPod, we helped HBO leap in front of a similar fate by innovating on its core, fundamental business: start streaming and moving its business and brand into D2C.

Move to Palo Alto in the golden age of technological innovation? Build the first truly interdisciplinary IDEO studio? You would have said yes as well. My first pivotal project was building a new type of digital tool for a very traditional hardware company - Snap-On Tools. The deliverable we presented? A 4-hour experiential walk-through in a custom garage we built to showcase the product in a totally immersive exhibit. This was the groundbreaking beginning of the modern-day customer experience: blending brand with storytelling and emotion. Show less

And I was off to the races. IDEO was the only company that was challenging the status quo of how design was showing up in the world and the value and impact that it could have. No one was thinking about design in a cross-disciplinary way. In this first chapter, I learned how to structure and deliver projects with collaboration at the core.

We’re out to redesign reproductive health so that it fits seamlessly into the lives of teens, because when girls take charge of their bodies, they take charge of their futures.
