Undergraduate Research Project : The Effect of Preservation Method on the Proximate and Microbial Quality of Periwinkle(Tympanotonusvarfuscatus). The study showed that brine(5%) was the best preservative for the storage of Periwinkle. Considering the health implications of microorganisms found in periwinkle and other shell fish, proper attention should be paid to the safety of processed periwinkles through the quality of water used for the cultivation, handling/canning and heating to reduce the level of pathogenic organisms in shellfish. As a Graduate Intern at NAFDAC, the experience i acquired during this period i will say was unforgettable. I had no idea of the vast knowledge i was to gain from the Internship. I went through different departments of the Agency which comprises of: Sample Reception - where items/products ranging from food, drug and water where received, documented and sent to the laboratories for further test and Analysis. Food Laboratory - comprised of the Food Regulation, Food Compliance and Sea food Laboratory, Quality control and Quality Assurance, where food samples were Analysed to identify their various Nutrients compositions, Shelf life and Standard operating systems and many more. Water Laboratory - water samples are cautiously tested to determine its purity, mineral contents, pH, acidity etc. Drug Laboratory - Analysis on drugs where carried out to identify the Active ingredients, disintegration etc. Microbiology Laboratory - Food, water and drug samples were analysed here for their microbiological contents, available spoilage organisms, shelf life and more. It was an amazing experience and would love to further my career in this path if i get the opportunity. Show less
