I directly reported to Opal in my role as an Associate Director at WDBCO. Opal is a visionary. As a leader of a non-profit she has been instrumental in identifying funding opportunities that propel her vision. When she sees opportunity she puts in the work to assure that the opportunity is seized. An example of this is the implementation of a healthcare industry sector partnership. Opal identified the need for collaboration to meet the talent needs of leading healthcare organizations. Through her dedication, they were recently awarded a grant to help further their concerted goals. Her leadership style is that of a coach. She is supportive and trustworthy. She utilizes the individual talents of her team in a manner that fulfills them while meeting the goals of the organization.

Opal is a colleague of mine through the Hopkins Local initiative. I worked for a local non-profit as an employment consultant she worked for Johns Hopkins Medicine building strategic workforce development partnerships. Opal not only understood the work, she understood those individuals that my organization was servicing. She connected with various departments in the Health System as well as provided insight to those individuals seeking employment on what it takes to not only get a job but to keep it and turn it into a career. She not only built bridges with the organization which I worked for but various non-profits and Baltimore anchor institutions. She was also very active in quarterly steering committee meetings to discuss various opportunities in the pipeline as well as ways to generate new hiring opportunities for those seeking benefits and looking to make above minimum wage. She's a workforce development trailblazer for sure as well as an inspiration.
