Artist at WCP's Exhibition Unveiling
-
Jun 2021 - Mar 2022
Unveiling, is an exhibition held by the Writing Circle Project which is made up of six artists; Blanes Wathumbi, Chelsea Nwasike, Fanny Kearse, Oluwaseun Olowo-Ake, Oluwasola Olowo-Ake and Oluwasayo Taiwo Olowo-Ake My artwork titled "Telephone [Interlude]" was exhibited as part of Unveiling. The launch event was held on the 21st of March, 2022 and the online component is available here https://www.thewcpcollective.com/ Part 1, "Japa, Jimasun", details abspecific immigrant's experience. It critiques the 'fair bargain' system that promises permanent residency to immigrants in exchange for their contribution to the country. "Japa, Jimasun" overtly exposes the unspoken costs borne by immigrants by looking underneath the fine print of the opportunity in order to reveal the reality of leaving one's home country. Part 2, "I Tried to Write A Song", presents the complexity of communication. It critiques the need to be understood by dismantling a chorus and bridge from a song called "Telephone" written in 2020. My role involved; Creating work for the exhibition titled "Telephone [Interlude]" which consists of two parts; Part 1 titled "Japa, Jimasun" and Part 2, titled "I Tried To Write A Song". Planning the arrangement of the print images in the exhibition Assisting with installation for the exhibition Working on promotional materials - placing information on flyers, organizing the program, working on promotional video for the exhibition. Curator Oruko Mi Ni: Reinterpreting Ìbejì
-
Jun 2021 - Jun 2021
Oruko mi ni was held online with Afropolis.org as a two-day event (26-27th June 2021) that brought together playwright Prof. Ahmed Yerima, scholar Dr. Kole Ade-Odutola and dancer Qudus Onikeku My role involved; Handling logistics and housekeeping involved in opening and closing the exhibition – budget, artists agreements and getting promotional information ready, making research binder Moderating discussions during exhibitions Liaising with artists and scholars to participate in the exhibition Developing the concept of exhibition Creating online components- see page titled “Ibeji Stories” and “Twins in 18 languages” on home page here https://www.orukominireinterpretingibeji.org/ The second part is embedded within an exhibition called Sankofa: African Routes, Canadian Roots, at the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology (October 21, 2021- March 27, 2022) and will include Ere Ibeji from the MOA collection contextualized by contemporary photography of twins by Nigerian photographer, Stephen Tayo. Oruko mi ni, (My name is) the curatorial project, presents Yoruba knowledges to redirect the focus from Ere Ibeji (Yoruba wooden twin figure) to the cultural traditions surrounding Ibeji (Yoruba twins). Oruko mi ni asks how we can view Ibeji with tools from their place of origin, not looking to Western collections to tell Ibeji stories. Furthermore, where can the Yoruba understanding of history, twinship and documentation practice lead us? Can the Yorubas’ knowledge of Ibeji inform how we reorient ourselves in relation to the world?
