  I joined Made Tech in order to work in a variety of different domains, deliver value to a much broader set of users, take advantage of the focus on learning, and work with people with a wide range of skill levels. Highlights: • Took the lead in refactoring and optimising the backend for a piece of critical infrastructure that was suffering from performance issues. This involved large refactors of a Java backend and analysis and optimisations of the queries to/structure of a Postgres database. • Took the lead in adding faceted search to an application. I integrated OpenSearch into an application with an existing Postgres database. In the process I refactored the backend to make use of events in order to make adding documents to OpenSearch more reliable, and to make handling eventual consistency simple. • Migrated an application to AWS and integrated it with a new scheduling system in "record time." • Mentored and worked with some fantastic junior developers. I helped them to understand best practices when developing software and encouraged them to explore computer science and programming at their own pace. Show less

  Highlights: • I used my knowledge of numerical algorithms from studying physics to build a calculator for fitting fill level sensors in water tanks, as well as a 3D visualisation with a custom shader to show the different fill levels. • I rewrote a "Total cost of ownership" calculator for mining equipment, using graph data structures & algorithms to significantly improve the performance of the application. • I wrote the backend and deployment pipeline for an e-commerce site, and helped with aspects of the frontend.
