Crossroads4Hope understands the emotional, social, physical, and spiritual toll that cancer can take on patients and their caretakers, therefore the goal is to better adapt to these individuals. By better understanding which communities are currently being served, Crossroads4Hope will be able to adjust goals to best bring access to more diverse populations. The African American population is highly cancer vulnerable, thus creating outreach programs that best suit the needs of this population is a priority. The more educated a patient and their caretaker feels during the cancer journey, the better the outcome for that individual's overall health. In this position as an intern, I collected, analyzed, and presented data on the demographics of past and current patients of Crossroads4Hope and found a clear gap in service to the African American Community. To increase outreach effectiveness and diversity, I created a survey to amplify the voices of these communities and their experiences in the healthcare system. Questions specifically about discrimination in the health care system and access to resources were posed to the participant. Lastly, I created educational toolkits to increase outreach to the community was created. These toolkits included infographics, PowerPoints, social media posts, and brochures on topics ranging from Prostate Cancer in African American men to Basic Nutrition For Cancer Prevention. These projects are setting the foundation for the next stage of work of a data-backed outreach program that is sensitive to the communities being served. Brochures and PowerPoint presentations tailored to the African American community serve as means of education on cancer screening and treatment. Show less

This lab project was conducted through the Rutgers Psychology department and was a year long Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) approved experiment. It examined the differential withdrawal experiences for electronic and combustible (regular) cigarette smokers. Smokers from Rutgers University as well as the surrounding New Brunswick and Piscataway area were recruited as participants. ✔ Conducted clinical phone screenings for potential research participants, assessing current substance use, psychosis, and suicidal ideation, as well as relevant medical history (e.g., presence of autonomic disorders) ✔ Guide research participant through study procedures, including collection and storage of salivary cotinine samples, completion of behavioral assessments of autonomic flexibility, and administration of self-report questionnaires ✔ Connect research participants to autonomic monitoring equipment, capturing electrocardiogram and cardiac impedance data ✔ Liaising with community providers and local businesses ✔ Trained in HIPAA compliance, ethics in research, and handling of biological specimens Show less

Rutgers Psychology Child Development Center has a Collaborative Learning program that allows students to use the information that they learn in the Infant and Child Development course and apply it to a classroom setting.
