For the past two years, I have been working at Ernest Bevin College as a newly qualified teacher, I have been very fortunate to gain experience teaching across all the key stages(3-5). Throughout this time, I have been adapting and creating all my own teaching resources to inspire the future generation of geographers. I have personally found teaching A-level the most rewarding as I enjoy the more challenging content as it brings in my expertise from my undergrad. During the first period of lockdown, we used our time as a department effectively and redevelop our whole stage three curriculum whilst simultaneously providing engaging online resources for our pupils. This gave us a rare opportunity to explore more online-based learning and tailor lessons to incorporate more independent research and digital mapping skill (ArcGIS). One of the modules I most enjoyed curating was ‘How water has shaped the UK’ which moved from the glaciation, fluvial processes, and ends with the coastal environment. As a tutor to a year eleven form, I have enjoyed getting to know these pupils on a more personal level. Recently we have focused on their journeys and aspirations for the future. These discussions have been a great way of getting to know the boys and offer support for them in this uncertain time. As I have got to know my students more, I have tried to tailor PSHE sessions to topics that are more engaging for them e.g., careers advice, financial management, and sexual health. I have found these sessions to be a pleasant change from my normal style of teaching and a good opportunity to expand my knowledge outside of geography. Furthermore, I have found being a form tutor particularly valuable to students at this time, as pupils have required more support pastorally due to the external pressures of our current situation.

During my second placement, I mainly worked with key stage three and four in the geography department. However, I also experienced teaching humanities for year 7 which was an exciting blend of curriculum, while here they asked me to redevelop a section working closely with both an R.E. and History teacher to create a balanced scheme of work based on the development of London’s culture. I also stepped out of my comfort zone and taught a history class at key stage three; this was an excellent opportunity to step out of my comfort zone. During this time, I also assisted a tutor in running several wellbeing days and in the creation of a small kitchen garden.

In my first placement of my PGCE, I focused on lesson observations, the creation of new schemes of work, and the planning of effective lessons for key stage three. I tried to make the most of my time observing key stage 4 and 5 geography lessons and other departments to gain a range of strategies to develop my pedagogies. When working as a student support worker, my priority was to support and encourage pupil premium students in GCSE years to progress further in their studies. This allowed me to assist and observe in a diversity of departments, which was beneficial when moving into my PGCE at UCL in the following year. As previously stated, my role was primarily to help pupil premium, however, I also worked one-to-one with some SEND students, the majority of which were social and emotional difficulties, pupils with dyslexia, and ASD pupils. Furthermore, I undertook lesson planning, which included: literacy and numeracy lessons, geography revision classes, history tutorials, and catch-up classes for science and humanities.Additional skills acquired:-Safeguarding awareness-One to one experience working with ASD students-Access arrangement workshop and exam experience-LGBT+ awareness and training-Literacy an numeracy classes with KS3

      • Over the past three years I have worked part time in a small café to fund my university studies. • This work involved serving and communicating with the public to be an effective food server and representative of the project.• Shorelands is a small zoological garden which focuses on the conservation of native and non-native engendered bird species. Whilst working here I would explain and educate the public about our conservation work. Especially our recent work helping the European White Stalk population.

      • As an ambassador for the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science I would liaise with prospective students looking to study Geography. • This involved speaking 1:1 with students and their parents, which meant answering their questions and being a representative of the department. This required good people skills and an ability to think quickly when responding to questions. • I also presented the student experience talk with a colleague which consisted of our own experience and academic journey through the University of Reading.
