- Supported the Hurricane Island research efforts and aquaculture operations - Sorted/recorded contents of spat bags to collect scallop spat - Cleaned, organized, and maintained equipment and gear - Sorted animals and monitored biological parameters - Assisted with outreach and collaboration with local community and students - Worked with Research Staff and Educators to integrate Hurricane Island's research efforts with on-island education programs - Assisted in delivering aquaculture and research specific educational programming, such as anatomy lessons, sorting spat bags, and aquaculture site tours to diverse audiences - On a weekly basis, submitted blog updates and other social media material (e.g. photos, Facebook posts, etc.) - Developed hard skills like knot tying and boat driving; - Furthered skills in science communication and outreach During my role as a Research Intern through the University of Maine Aquaculture Research Institute at the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership, I was able to capitalize on existing research done utilizing sea scallop spat bags to evaluate larval supply to scallop management areas. I sorted, identified, and counted all species collected in spat bags from the Lower Penobscot Bay rotational management area and from the Muscle Ridge Closed Area. I then compared species diversity and abundances of all species in spat bags between these two areas and also record scallop size frequencies. This data I collected supports current long-term monitoring efforts of larval supply to these areas and adds to Hurricane Island's understanding of species diversity and distributions along the Maine coast.
