I have known Oliver since September 2009 during the progress of his LL.M Degree in Commercial Law at the University of Edinburgh. I am a Senior Lecturer in Commercial Law at the University of Edinburgh and am the Programme Director of the postgraduate LLM in Commercial Law. During the academic year 2009/2010, I had the opportunity to observe Oliver inside and outside of classes first-hand. Oliver is a qualified solicitor and graduated with a 2:1 LL.B (Hons) degree from the University of Aberdeen in 2006. By way of explanation, student performance in the Commercial Law LLM is assessed by a series of essays and a final dissertation rather than exams. Oliver’s performance in his first semester essays was excellent. He obtained an extremely impressive mark of 88% for the Banking & Finance Law course (the top student mark in the course out of 30 students) and marks of 68% and 67% for the Company Law and International Commercial Arbitration courses respectively. Oliver achieved a respectable mark of 71% for his 10,000 word dissertation and graduated in November 2010 with a Commercial Law LLM degree with Distinction. This is an extraordinary achievement since it is unusual for more than 5% of the Commercial Law LLM student cohort to graduate with a distinction. On the basis of his performance and past experience, I am convinced that Oliver is suitable for a career in law. His attention to detail, written communication skills and sense of purpose will stand him in good stead in the legal environment With regard to Oliver’s personal qualities, I can say that I was impressed by the level of active participation which he displayed in discussions in classes. He was always well prepared for seminars and it was clear that he had read widely and had a sense of personal responsibility about his own studies. He was clearly enthusiastic, inquisitive, had a good sense of humour and was committed to making a contribution to debate in seminars. Oliver was also popular with his peers, has a good attitude to work and is able to function well in a team setting. Since graduating, Oliver has done some part-time tutoring for us at the Law School and students have enjoyed his classes. I have no hesitation in commending Oliver to you.
