I work as a Band 5 RMN on a 22 bed female inpatient unit. Our service provide acute emergency assessment and treament for females ages 18-65 suffering with mental illness. The key duties in my roll, as part of the care team are: • To provide care and support to individuals with acute mental health needs in an inpatient setting under in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. • To maintain personal contact with patients, their relatives and carers. Being sensitive to their needs for respect, privacy and dignity and to act as a senior point of contact on the ward. • To ensure that all staff follow the guidelines identified in both the Trusts’ and National policies. • To assist in ensuring that the provision of nursing care is to the optimum standard achievable within allocated resources. • To ensure that patients, their families and carers are directly involved in decisions which affect their care. • To promote high standards of patient care by the application of a systematic care planning approach which utilises an appropriate nursing model. • To initiate patient focussed interventions and developments, which reflect social, cultural and spiritual needs. • To ensure that each patient has a comprehensive and holistic assessment of their care needs with a mutually agreed plan of care between the patient and the nurse.

As a nursing assistant for GMMH i worked in a veriety of different inpatient settings, including: functional elderly and dementia, children and adolescent services, forensic inpatient services, acute adult inpatient services and psychiatric instensive care units. I began full time work at a forensic inaptient unit for adolescent males in 2017; my key rolls were as follows: • To work as an allocated nurse for a group of patients providing individualised care with the support and guidance of registered nurses. • To safeguard young peoople and advocate on their behalf. • To accurately document nursing care in the nursing notes. • To ensure effective communication, either verbal or written, is carried out amongst the team, reporting any change or unusual occurrence in an individual’s behaviour or condition. • To understand the importance of the need for confidentiality in all patient matters. • To participate / facilitate patient activities within and outside of the unit, under the direction of senior staff. To assist Therapy staff in their therapeutic activity with ward patients. • To assist in the safe keeping of patient’s property and clothing as required. • To participate in the maintenance of the ward as a clean, tidy and safe environment. • To assist patients in the maintenance of adequate nutrition and hydration. To help patients to choose and order appropriately from the menu taking into account any special dietary requirements. • To undertake escort duty with patients as directed by the nursing staff. • To carry out duties as allocated by a senior nurse. • To complete patient monitoring charts in relation to e.g. weight, input/output of diet and fluids, observation repositioning etc. • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and have a positive attitude within the team and when dealing with the young people, their families and members of the public.
