  Confirmed a highly protective effect of the large surface protein in prophylactic immunization against hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related woodchuck hepatitis virus (WHV) in a woodchuck model.• Established new and efficient in vitro neutralization assay using the primary woodchuck hepatocytes (PWH).   • Created a new strategy for the improvement of HBV prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines’ immunogenicity: the combination of highly immunogenic non-infectious HBV core protein (HBcAg) capsid-like particles as carriers and immunogenicity enhancers for the neutralizing epitopes of the large HBV surface protein participating in binding to hepatocytes.• Proved the potency of HBcAg to induce a vigorous T- and B-cell immune responses and its ability to ensure a high level of B-cell immunogenicity to the fused surface protein’s sequence.
