Dr. Olanike Coker-Akinduyite has been a very consistent academic leading light especially to female folks. Young Olanike came into limelight in 1996 when she was the overall best student in the Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination and also won the UNOSA ’92 Maiden Scholarship Award. She had great feats in all schools she attended. She won the First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Award in 2007 as the 3rd best graduating student from the department of computer science FUTA, 2017 ACM-W Scholarship award, 2017 Super Computing (SC17) Travel Grant, Denver, CO, U.S.A. It was a big celebration galore in FUTA on the 6th of December, 2018 when as a PhD student, she won the L’Oreal-UNESCO Fellowship Award for Women in Science Sub-Saharan Africa. Before that, in September 2018, she was selected among 200 most qualified young researchers in Computer Science and Mathematics from all over the world to participate in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), which was held in Heidelberg, Germany. She is an Alumni of the prestigious Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in Trieste, Italy. She received a Super Computing (SC17) Travel Grant, to attend the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis: Super Computing 2017, at the Colorado Convention Centre, Denver CO as a student volunteer Her Ph.D. thesis and viva were highly commended by the board of External Examiners; she earned a Distinction mark for a job well done. I strongly recommend her

The need for Mathematics and Computer Science has evolved as a matter of utmost importance in our modern society which is confronted with the product of mathematical and computational research as it affects every aspect of our daily lives. In order to ensure thriving of this technical revolution, the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) which was initiated by the German foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS) rises to the challenge to promotes natural sciences, mathematics and computer science by bringing together 200 carefully selected young researchers in mathematics and computer science from all over the world with exceptional Mathematicians and Computer Scientists who are recipients of the most prestigious awards in mathematics and computer science , the Abel Prize, ACM A.M Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal and Nevanlinna Prize in a week-long networking conference with a blend of scientific and social program elements in a relaxed atmosphere to initiate scientific exchange among the participants. The idea is believed to providebright young minds the opportunities to interact with their scientific role models, physicists and co-founder of SAP, Klaus Tschira who laid the groundwork for the Forum to exist. By 2050, Africa is projected to be a home to another 1.3 billion people which represents more than half of the global population growth. Despite this, the continent still faces some major challenges including climate change, poverty, lack of access to energy and safe water, along with resource scarcity. In addressing these challenges, science and technology has been found to play critical role with both genders equally equipped to address the situations. However, there are simply not enough women scientists in Africa to drive change at the scale at which it is needed. Distinct barriers facing the African women includes lack of role models, insufficient funding and supports and gender stereotypes among others. This has been found to greatly discourage an average African girl to study science from an early age. To address these barriers, the L’Oréal Foundation has been in partnership with UNESCO in over 2 decades in providing critical support and highlighting outstanding African women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The L’oreal-UNESCO For-Women-in-Science Africa fellowship programme honors emerging women scientists from across the continent and offer grants to support and accelerate their research as well as giving them the commitment to empowering them to receive the recognition they deserve.
