I had the pleasure of working with João Souza on the Morrobótica STEM project (http://bit.ly/399eJRg) at Morro Papagaio where students learn to program robots and solve puzzles with LEGO Mindstorms. João is an inspiring CEO with a down to earth attitude belying steel, determination, and integrity. He is passionate about technology, has a deep philosophical understanding of societal issues, and brings in an all-day work ethic that is inspiring.

Joao is a tremendous leader who has the rare ability to engage an executive of a Fortune 500 company, a consulate general from a global economic power or disenfranchised individuals from the Brazilian favelas to create a long-term relationship that results in a socially impactful opportunities for governments, businesses and citizens. I first met Joao while on a social sabbatical where I worked directly with Joao and his team from Fa.vela. Joao’s vision was clear throughout the process as he leveraged the latest techniques of the technology start up world that he had adapted into easy to understand and impactful lesson plans that connected with his trainees from the favelas. This training was purpose built and provided the favela community with the tools they needed to develop and execute on their entrepreneurial business plans. Further, Joao has been instrumental in helping the local businesses and governmental agencies innovate thru the development of more inclusive and diverse cultures. Fa.vela provides a network to help organizations, public or private, engage the favela community to create a more inclusive culture that, ultimately, provides greater intellectual diversity for problem solving. Truly a win/win solution for all. Lastly, I continue to engage with Joao and his team and look forward to seeing the continued impact of the Fa.vela organization both inside and outside Brazil.
