Vicomtech-IK4 (Visual Interaction and Communication Technologies Centre) is an applied research centre for Interactive Computer Graphics and Multimedia. Vicomtech is a member of the IK4 Technological Alliance and it also belongs to the international investigation GraphicsMedia.net organization. I worked specifically at the eHealth & Biomedical Applications area which carries out research and development in computer-assisted technologies for the healthcare and biotechnology industry. The main research activities include image analysis, advanced interface and biomedical information management. Mostly I worked in three projects: - An application for the diagnosis and digital planning of the treatments for dental implant surgery. - An application for digital planning of orthopedic knee and other joints surgery. - Fundus image analysis software. As software developer, for the three projects, I worked in the DICOM series, 2D image and STL model loading; resulting image 2D analysis, interaction and visualization, 3D reconstruction and volume rendering and user interface development. The libraries used to develop the applications were ITK (Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit), VTK (Visualization Toolkit), OpenCV (library aimed at Computer vision) and Qt (User Interface) and I employed the also open-source and cross-platform CMake to link all the necessary libraries together. For all these, I used modular programming technique to help to create new tests to validate each module. SVN was installed as software versioning and revision control system and Mantis as bug tracking system. As researcher, I had to find solution to issues proposed by the clients or to problems that could offer added value to the project. Main problems were related to image analysis and processing. In all three projects, I worked in continuous contact with the client. The applications were industrial R&D projects, being one of them an already commercialized software. Show less

Medical Imaging viewer system. This was the first time that I had the great opportunity to start working on the thrilling world of the medical imaging. The aim of the project carried out in the 15 months scholarship holding, was to develop a modular application for managing and viewing MRI DICOM medical 2D image series and 3D reconstructions. The application, which started from scratch, was related to liver tumor diagnosis. My role in this project was to develop a User Interface able to load a series of DICOM images and, from the three-dimensional reconstruction, create two-dimensional images result from the cuts in the three orthogonal planes. The 3D reconstruction was also shown due to VTK using. The software was also able to load and show binary 2D image series and reconstruct them to create different tissues. Visualization options were also distinct depending on the tissue label. The application was developed using Visual Studio, C++, ITK, VTK and filtering algorithms. Show less
