I worked as a basic care assistant for 9 hours a day at a neurology ward in NTFGH. It was an enjoyable experience to be able to assist the staff nurses in lightening their workload. My job scope mainly consisted of assisting in sponging the patients, bringing them to the toilet, feeding the patients, taking vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, NGT feeding and etc. This short working experience was a good opportunity to refresh my memory and also to familiarise myself with the hospital's routine. I was also able to refresh my critical thinking skills. While I was talking to a patient, he went into a stroke and I immediately called for help while putting him into a lateral position. Show less

I was attached to KKH obstetric ward for 2 weeks. This attachment really pushed me to learn and carry out new skills that I have never done before. The conditions that I experienced there were a whole new environment for me. The nursing skills were also ones that I've never practiced before. However, I was open and willing to learn, carry out the skills, and make the patient's stay a safe and memorable one. During this attachment, I learned how to do handovers, what to include in handovers, and effective and comforting ways to communicate with new parents. I also got to educate mothers on how to promote breast milk, and many more. Overall, it was a great and knowledgeable experience! Show less

I was attached to NTFGH's orthopedic surgical ward for 4 weeks. During those 4 weeks, I've learned a lot of things about certain conditions, such as cervical myelopathy, and carried out the nursing management required. I've also improved on my critical thinking skills through situations that happened where a patient was shouting in pain and required attention from a nurse. Being a student nurse with boundaries, I immediately went to and assessed his condition such as using the OLD CART to assess his pain. After doing so, I went ahead to inform the staff nurse and also went to retrieve a cold compress to relieve his pain. I've also learned how important being time-efficient is, and how crucial it is to be quick on my feet. Being in a surgical ward, the environment is much more fast-paced as compared to my previous posting at the community hospital. I enjoyed this attachment a lot as I was experiencing a new environment with so much knowledge that I got to learn. My grade for this 4 weeks surgical attachment was A+. Show less

I was attached to JCH for 3 weeks in a geriatric ward. As this was my first attachment, I did experience a lot of challenges. Being exposed to patients and having to work together and assist staff nurses was quite challenging at first. Eventually, I got used to it and put in the effort to learn about nursing management and care for the patients' conditions every day after each shift. This attachment was a great experience to be learning and actually carrying out the practical skills I learned on actual patients. The grade that I received was an A. Show less
