Title : Epidemiologic analysis of the infections by Small Ruminant Lentiviruses (SRLV) and its contribution to the knowledge of the pathogenesis by these viruses. My PhD combined the use of several laboratory techniques with epidemiology and statistical analysis. Using PCR, ELISA together with tissue culture techniques, I explored the diagnosis of Lentiviruses infections. Following the processing of the samples I calculated the prevalence of these infections and risk factors associated to them. Statistical analysis included ordinary logistic regression and multivariable logistic regressions. The results of my studies were published in peer reviewed journals and consisted in 4 different publications.

During my residence at the AHT I undertook several epidemiologic projects related with horses’ infectious diseases. As part of my residence I achieved an MSc in Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health. The scholarship programme was based in epidemiology and biostatistics; I was involved in the design of epidemiological studies and conduct of statistical analyses of several projects. This provided me with experience in data management, planning and application of different statistical methods, use of statistical software, writing of statistical reports and contributing to papers for publication. I was involved as well in the planning of clinical trials in horses for the study of efficacy of influenza vaccines. I also worked with techniques as PCR and MLST.

During the time I was working at Yale University I conducted studies of ethiology and pathogenesis of Prions diseases, CJD and Scrapie. I developed tissue ,cell culture and animal models of Scrapie and CJD. I worked with different techniques such as Western Blot, Cell Immunostaining, RNA isolation, DNA isolation. Some of my results were published in peer reviewed journal. During the time I was working at Yale University I conducted studies of ethiology and pathogenesis of Prions diseases, CJD and Scrapie. During my Master Thesis Degree, I explored whether milk could provide an appropriate substrate for diagnosing Small Ruminant Lentiviruses (SRLV) infections instead of blood. In addition, I analysed the suitability of different diagnosis test for the diagnosis of these viral infections in both blood and milk. I conducted the first Seroepidemiological survey of Small Ruminants Lentiviruses (SRLVs) in Madrid. My study was based on several experiments, such as a prevalence study using ELISA and PCR on sheep and goat milk samples.
