I am privileged to be part of a research unit and a flagship program that strives to assist research leaders in their quest to develop innovative, relevant, and sustainable solutions for Africa, by Africans. In order to reach the desired state in our communities, Africa, and the globe at large it is essential that we recognize as well as support researchers and scientists. In addition, support the university in its endeavor of becoming a research-led university, to bring about change and build resilience in our African mountain communities. That require us to go beyond our duties, it requires us to care for the Afromontane regions. Show less

      • 2020 - Present

I took the initiative to host tutorials and a homework club to help bridge the gap between the demand for quality extracurricular services and the supply of such services. Striving to ease the burden that was caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, for both parents and the schools in order to ensure that learners, particularly disadvantaged learners are not setback even further, but rather receive the assistance that they need. I facilitate lessons with an inquiry-based learning approach; guiding the learners to be curious enough to ask questions and provoke critical thinking in the effort of gaining knowledge. In addition, creating a conducive, fun learning environment, which in essence motivates the learners to become experts in answering their own questions and gives them confidence in their own abilities. • Education Assistant
      • Dec 2020 - Apr 2021

I not only assisted the school with administrative work, but also facilitated classes in and outside the classroom. I was mainly assigned to the grade 1 Afrikaans class, but was also flexible enough to take on the challenge of individually facilitating other grades’ Afrikaans and English classes for various subjects. The vast difference among the different grades and that of lessons conducted in Afrikaans and those conducted in English sharpened my communication skills, exercised my patience muscle and emphasized the importance of taking into account social contexts and cultural backgrounds of people. • Aug 2019 - Aug 2020

I took on the role of one of the grade 3 English teachers. I was responsible for facilitating classes alongside a Chinese co-teacher as well as responsible for lesson planning, drafting exams (both written and oral) moderating and invigilating exam sessions etc. A challenging highlight was communicating directly with the parents as most of the parents’ English proficiency was as limited as my Mandarin proficiency. However, the opportunity to interact and work with the parents allowed me to witness their interest and level of accountability that they take regarding their children’s education, which was refreshing to witness and further developed my cross-cultural relationship skills. Moreover, I participated in facilitating extramural activities such as organizing school events, drawing club and sports. Show less

I performed the role of an English teacher for learners as young as 3 years old to teenage years. I was responsible for lesson planning, invigilating and marking tests, Cambridge oral examiner, hosting school concerts etc. The opportunity honed my people management and time management skills. Being in an environment completely different from the one I’m used to, was a challenging highlight, as it was my first time in Asia. I experienced a level of culture shock but quickly adapted as I immersed myself in the Chinese culture and interacted with people from all walks of life. Show less
