  Provided free legal advice and assistance regarding education issues to students of color and low-income families: - Assisted families through school and court administrative hearings in obtaining necessary education, mental health and social services based on students’ individual needs - Supported and managed 200+ students’ cases, annually, half of whom received special education services such as individual education plans (IEP) and 504 accommodation plans, in negotiation, mediation, and other alternative dispute resolution of school-related issues. Ensured student and his/her parent participated in school IEP or disciplinary hearings. Advocated on behalf of students, requiring schools to rescind and/or reduce school disciplinary actions in accordance to student educational rights and need. - Partnered with parents, school officials and community agencies to improve students’ academic success. Through school resource fairs and school workshops, provided information on student educational rights in accessing appropriate educational resources. Worked with assigned education law attorney in creating brochures on student educational rights to be in school. - Promoted student success through follow-up support and ensuring students obtained necessary services. Followed-up with school visits and telephone calls to students, teachers and parents to ensure students were attending school regularly, behavioral challenges were not reoccurring and appropriate school services were being provided. - Participated in varieties of stakes holder/community groups meetings and conferences on educational issues affecting low-income students. Through workshops and training, highlighted cultural, social and economic barriers that low-income students of color face and how these challenges interfere with students’ learning and /or academic progress.
