What and how do experts learn from their encounters with the policy world? In assuming the role of advisers to government, scholars step out of the academic world to engage directly or indirectly with policymakers. Through their various encounters, experts learn how to become more effective advisers. In my PhD project I put this kind of learning under the microscope - looking at both individual experiences and institutions (e.g. advisory committees). I focus on the case of environmental science-policy in the UK.

Work on an ad hoc basis for Change Agency, a strategic consultancy, for a mix of corporate, professional services and non-profit clients. Much of the work has been for Multi-Stakeholder Initiatives (MSIs) which manage global sustainability standards and tools, such as the Alliance for Water Stewardship, Bonsucro, Better Cotton Initiative, and IDH the sustainable trade initiative. Work mostly involved: desk research and research design (e.g., factsheets, landscape mapping, policy and trends analysis), interview coding and qualitative data analysis, and report writing.

The UNDP Green Commodities Programme (GCP) acts as a catalyst of mid to long-term national, structural and systemic commodity sector changes in support of sustainable agriculture. I worked with two other consultants to support the development of GCP's new Strategy for 2021-2023. My work involved:• Analysis and write-up of qualitative data (surveys, interviews, and workshops);• Ad hoc advice on research design, process, and logistics;• Drafts, comments, and/or due diligence for various client-facing products; and• Contributions to conversations on strategic recommendations and planning.

Intern - Technical Support Unit (TSU) for Land Degradation and Restoration Assessment (LDRA)

I assisted the coordinator of the Land Degradation and Restoration Assessment (LDRA) - a several hundred page synthesis of the drivers, status, trends, projections, and responses to the decline of biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services worldwide.Most of the work was editorial in nature: content editing, citation management, copy editing and formatting.The Technical Support Unit (TSU) is responsible for ensuring that the assessment is legible, consistent, and accessible - including and most importantly the Summary for Policymakers, the keystone document in global environmental assessments.

Researcher - Greater Mekong

I conducted research on water issues in the major river basins/catchments in Continental Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Lao PDR) to identify the most pressing issues and vulnerable catchment areas in each basin, as well as devising which sectors are affecting, and are most affected by, water problems in these catchments. I also helped to organise a free introductory workshop in Bangkok (jointly with WWF-Thailand) which attracted over 60 participants from both the private and public sector.
