This past summer, I hired Nitin Kumar as an Intern in our Environmental Informatics group at Battelle’s Norwell, Massachusetts lab. Battelle Norwell provides environmental consulting services including environmental data management. As his direct report, I got to know Nitin through our daily interactions as he progressed his summer project to implement, for the first time in our group, a content management system for client access to their environmental data. From these observations and our interactions and discussions, I have found Nitin to be an insightful young man who utilizes his own subject knowledge as well as the perspectives of others to accomplish his goals and continuously improve his capability. I had the opportunity to observe Nitin as he developed his summer project from an outline into the complete software and database system we are using today. Nitin first developed a detailed project plan from the rough outline I sketched for him. He immediately understood our need to accelerate our web development process with a content management system. He then researched selection options, presented the options to our team, and in so doing convinced us of the applicability and value of WordPress for our needs. He then went back and implemented the system. He did much more than install and configure WordPress and MySql. He developed a large code base needed to interface WordPress (a MySql based system) to our Oracle databases. He also developed admin plugins to interface our Oracle database content to WordPress client portals with no need for us to develop code. And he completed the entire project in just 10 weeks. In our Environmental Informatics group, we pride ourselves on being environmental scientists, engineers, and oceanographers first and data scientists second. As such, none of us have formal training in computer or information science. Nitin expertly navigated his role as our computer science consultant to assess our need, analyze our options, determine a cost effective option, and code up an implementation of that strategy. As outlined above, I have seen Nitin in multiple technical, project management and social contexts and recommend him wholeheartedly. Nitin’s dedication to his practice, thoughtful preparation, technical and other insights, and desire to improve make him an ideal candidate for any future professional setting.

At ForagerOne, we believe research drives the world forward. Our mission is to create networks and tools that promote and accelerate research globally, at all levels, in every field. To this end, our first step has been to create a platform to connect students and faculty at research institutions to help students become involved in faculty research. Currently in the Beta stage, we have implemented this platform at the Johns Hopkins University and are now developing additional functionality into the platform. Simultaneously, we are developing a novel, scalable data solution to consolidate university research, and incorporating intelligent processes and data analytics to facilitate student-faculty interactions. We will be scaling our solution to other universities soon. Show less

Designed some of the more mechanically complex systems in the robot, such as a climbing mechanism and a catching mechanism, in SolidWorks. Also worked in my senior year with the different systems being put together and worked on multiple aspects of the robot, from the mechanical designing to the electrical wiring and even some parts of LabView programming.
