I was involved in various tasks throughout my eight week summer placement. There were many things that I put in to practice from learning in year one such as soil descriptions, the use of Eurocode and CAD softwares. There were also many new things that I have learned that will help me to better understand soil mechanics and geotechnical modules to come. I have learned how to use three different programmes; Micro Drainage, Hole Base and Geo Studio. During my placement I produced several desk studies for a number of different projects. This involved analysing and extrapolating data from online sources, such as the British Geological Standard, magic maps, google earth and historic maps, into a much more condensed version for the clients. Work experience involved building a rapport with customers and finding a solution to their needs which developed my communication skills in a professional environment whilst working alongside colleges which enhanced my ability to work within a team. Whilst gaining work experience in Barclays, I learnt the company’s safety measures and abided by them professionally which taught me to be responsible as my actions represented the company’s values.
