As a research assistant within the conservation team for Operation Wallacea, I conducted a range of environmental monitoring techniques including transects, bird point counts, vegetation and biodiversity surveys, and species identification- through the installation of a matrix of camera traps. Addressing key topics in conservation such as human-wildlife conflict and the impact anthropogenic activity has on both terrestrial and marine habitats. By tracking animal population distributions and mapping the local area in GIS, we identified levels of environmental damage and assessed the abundance/scarcity of biodiversity. This opportunity allowed me to develop my skills in data collection, entry, analysis, and communication. The expedition enriched my skills as a research assistant, working within and learning from, a dynamic team of like-minded passionate conservationists from across the world. Show less
