As part of my course, I have worked on various projects based on micro-organisms. The first organism I worked on was, Serratia marcesecenes. I have worked with other microbes such as Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Eschirichia coli, Sacchromyces cerevisae and the species of Pseudomonas. I have also learned about the characteristics of different classes of micro-organisms. I have gained a thorough knowledge on HACCP, GMPs, SOPs and WHIMS as part of my course. As part of my Co-op programme, I had the previlage to work in the esteemed organisation of Maxxam Analytics Inc., which is Canada's largest food testing facility wherein we test food samples for any kind of microbiological contamination. In Maxxam, I have worked at the pre-processing lab where we obtain food samples from the leading food manufacturers and process it and is kept for incubation to check any kind of contamination that might be present in the food. We do this process in a given time frame as we have to meet deadlines that is assigned to us by our clients. I have also poured media into plates and done spread plate technique along with working in high-risk areas wherein we have to deal with contaminated food. I have worked with food samples from various food stalls of Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) and also worked with food samples from Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Show less
