May 2020 - Sep 2020
- Member of the Core Firmware: Assets team—a cross product platform team that designs, develops, and maintains the embedded software for Samsara's asset tracking products - Created an automated tool to collect diagnostic data and investigate root-cause analysis for devices returned for warranty exchange - Devices with critical hardware/firmware issues require time-consuming investigative procedures that can only be performed by someone with low-level firmware/hardware knowledge, and this data is useful to drive improvements and decrease the number of exchanged devices going-forward - Developed a tool that offloads this work from the firmware engineering team and performs an exhaustive data collection process that accounts for the multitude of possible issues a device could be exhibiting - Worked with firmware engineers, the hardware team, and device manufacturers to test and provide design feedback on custom hardware developed for this screening process - Developed a Test Suite to test GPS capability of Samsara devices under a variety of different operating conditions. These tests are completely automated and will be used continuously, along with other Quality Assurance Test Benches, to ensure smooth roll-outs of new device firmware versions and catch issues with current firmware as soon as possible Show less

- Undergraduate Researcher at the MEMS Sensors and Actuators Laboratory (MSAL)—which focuses on technology and biomedical device development using micro-nano-bio engineering approaches—emphasizing holistic solutions for real-world use - Worked under Dr. Sangwook Chu and PI Dr. Reza Ghodssi on a drug delivery project—applying electrowetting-based 3-D biofabrication techniques and microneedles for the development of minimally invasive transdermal delivery devices towards engineered immune responses - Publication: S. Chu, N. Uplekar, et al., "Complementary Capillary System Integrated Microneedles for Autonomously Localized Therapeutics Loading," in Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems, doi: 10.1109/JMEMS.2020.2999255 Show less

- Member of Group 33: Advanced Sensor Systems and Test Beds—which designs, develops, and prototypes experimental sensor systems and employment architectures for air defense systems and the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense System - Overhauled a major portion (MATLAB) of an important threat-emulation system that employs electronic attacks against a radar system to test, train, and protect these systems. Tasked with overhauling this code – to make it modular and drastically simplify the attack generation process. The overhauled approach is now used for airborne field testing - Developed a rapidly-deployable, low-SWaP alternative to traditional lab signal analysis tools to assist in development and field-testing—providing a tool that does not require excessive development overhead on behalf of the user. Created an interactive command line tool using C programming and a Tektronix RSA306B SDR that enables a user to specify various key parameters and have the desired data streamed via USB to the user’s laptop. Also developed a MATLAB parsing object to aid in investigating the recorded data - Participated in the on-site setup of a complex radar system for a DOD/CWP project in the Midwest Show less

- Member of the Supply Chain Optimization Technology Workflow Group—a team of approx. 10 responsible for buying the $100B+ worth of inventory that Amazon sells on its retail websites worldwide - Tasked with creating a new internal tool to fulfill the role of a previously existing one. This tool provides a top-down ‘window’ into the supply chain system, and is used daily by engineers/ management to observe buying system performance and identify trends/abnormalities. The team replaced their system with a new architecture—and with this the flexibility of a queryable structure for answering business questions was lost - Created a search solution built on top of existing data streams and a UI to interact with it. The tool had to support the previous features while being notably faster and providing greater flexibility to expand the tool in the future - Responsible for choosing the optimum database for the project and designing the pipeline, end-to-end, to deliver data from the existing systems to the chosen solution - Developed the tool by integrating a pipeline/database consisting of 7 AWS Services with the team’s system. Production stacks for the tool are running globally across Amazon’s primary operating regions Show less

- Member of the Strike Systems Engineering Group - Contributed to the Minotaur Mission Management System—a defensive airborne mission system providing situational awareness and passive maritime surveillance capabilities for U.S. Government Aircraft - Worked in a rapid prototyping environment and contributed to front-end and back-end capabilities using Java, React/Redux, TypeScript/JavaScript, and C++ - Developed a TypeScript data-grid application for intercepted signal analysis. Tasking included analyzing a substantial React/Redux application to add new features, developing features proposed in the proof-of-concept, and introducing modular libraries to provide an enhanced UI. React/Redux improvements involved devising solutions to unresolved memory issues, normalizing the Redux application state, and resolving rendering issues in React—modifications yielded 20x performance improvements Show less
