Project Manager - LIFE+ Malta Seabird Project
-
Jul 2012 - Sep 2016
Project partners: BirdLife Malta, Ministry of Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change (MSDEC), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves (SPEA)Value: 873,964.00 €, 50% LIFE co-financingThe LIFE+ Malta Seabird Project researched the habits of Malta's three Procellariform seabird species: the Yelkouan shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan), the Scopoli's shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) and the Mediterranean subspecies of the European storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) breeding in Malta, with the aim of identifying important sites for these seabirds at sea and guaranteeing their protection. As a result of this project, the Maltese government in June 2016 designated eight new marine Special Protection Areas (SPAs) covering no less than 27% of Malta’s Fisheries Management Zone which extends to a 25 nautical mile radius to the Maltese Islands. As a result, Malta is possibly the first EU country where 100% of its marine IBAs have been fully designated as marine SPAs. Show less
